Core idea
Recursion:
if root1 and root2 are both None, then the new tree does not have the child at this position. if either root1 or root2 exists while the other is None, make the existing node as the new node.
Original study notes follow, including intermediate snippets and earlier attempts.
Recursion:
- if root1 and root2 are both None, then the new tree does not have the child at this position.
- if either root1 or root2 exists while the other is None, make the existing node as the new node.
- if both two are valid, merge them by adding the values up and make a new node.

Python solution¶
# Definition for a binary tree node.
# class TreeNode:
# def __init__(self, val=0, left=None, right=None):
# self.val = val
# self.left = left
# self.right = right
class Solution:
def mergeTrees(self, root1: Optional[TreeNode], root2: Optional[TreeNode]) -> Optional[TreeNode]:
if not root1 and not root2:
return None
if root1 and not root2:
return root1
if not root1 and root2:
